Civil and Religious Marriage

The distinction should be made between a civil marriage and a religious marriage. A civil marriage is a ceremony conducted by a public official that takes place in a state authorised location, often a town hall. A religious marriage is a intimate social union between a least two people in front of a deity or several. I keep the definition loose as it can vary wildly between religions and even churches within the same religion.
When gay marriage is discussed by lawmakers, representatives and quite recently the President, they are not referring to changing religious marriage but civil marriage, religious marriage will remain unaffected. Take the Roman Catholic church for example, a marriage is when a man and a woman become “one flesh” in the eyes of God. Civil marriages have been legal for a long time, but is a not marriage in the eyes of the church. Divorce his been legal for decades, but the church does not recognise them, only annulments, meaning that the marriage was invalid to begin with, carried out by the church itself. If a divorcee wants to re-marry, the Roman Catholic church will not marry them.
None of this will change if gay marriage is legalised, it will just be another law for the church to ignore. No religion will have to conduct same sex marriages if it does not wish to, and it will not be forced to do so. Your religion won’t be affected in the slightest.
